Mississippi has developed an impressive Understanding by Design
curriculum. How do you start the transition to new standards from where are you now? How
can you use the big ideas of Understanding by Design including backward design, performance assessment, and the learning principles
of acquisition, meaning making and transfer to bridge this transition to Common Core Standards (CCS)? This
one-day institute will engage participants in examining the standards and their implications for curriculum, assessment, and
instruction through exercises and activities that clarify K-12 CCS and grade-level standards. As
participants become more familiar with the standards, they will outline a short-and/or long-term plan for their district or
school in the subject areas addressed for the four core subjects. (Science and social studies are addressed in the English
language arts standards). Participants will receive information and examples related to current initiatives
from various states and districts regarding aligning curriculum and assessment with Common Core Standards. Participants
should bring a copy of their school or district curriculum guide along with the CCS. The Common Core Standards
will be posted with session handouts on the ASCD website.
This
workshop will help participants:
Increase their familiarity with the CCS and develop skills to clarify the standards,
Develop a tailored plan for unpacking CCS that considers implications for curriculum, assessment,
and classroom practice, and Learn
about and discuss varied initiatives related to Common Core.
Combined areas of expertise from the presenters include:
1) Common Core Standards, 2) Differentiated Instruction, 3) Mathematics Instruction, 4) Understanding by Design,
5) Teacher Leadership, and 6) Instructional Leadership.
